Zhang Zongcai, a professor of Sichuan University working for State Key Laboratory for Cleaner Leather Making, made a speech on recent held leather chemicals forum in Beijing, saying that fur industry in China has achieved a remarkable progress and become a largest country on fur processing and export, but still backward in processing technologies and management.
Professor Zhang pointed out that fur processing still relies on Formaldehyde tanning agents to discolor the fur skins, there are many technical issues waiting to solve, such as harmful residues of formaldehyde and hexavalent chrome contend in the fur, emission of pollutants and low absorption of agents.
When talking about the solution to above issues he proposed using the organic tanning agents to replace the current chrome agents, and employing eco-processing technology package for reducing the amount of pollutant emission and recycling the exhausted agents.
Professor Zhang also recommended many other cleaner production technologies for cutting the period of fur processing and reducing emission of effluent. CITATION http://www.chinaleather.org/eng/show.php?itemid=5936
