Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said Thursday China's first water resources survey would help in the country's water conservancy development.
Hui, also head of the National Water Resources Survey Leading Group, told a meeting that the national water resources survey would help to accelerate reform and development of the water conservancy work.
"The water conservancy work has provided a guarantee for sustainable economic and social development," Hui said, adding that current water conservancy development faced new problems and challenges.
In order to tackle these problems, the State Council, or Cabinet, decided to conduct the three-year national water resources survey, which aims to make a thorough investigation of China's rivers and lakes, grasp conditions of the country's water resources' development, exploitation and protection as well as building capacity of water conservancy projects.
Hui said the survey could help protect water resources, build an energy saving and environment-friendly society and guarantee supply of major agricultural products and food security.
He said the task was "extremely arduous," and efforts should be made to ensure the funding of the survey and the training of survey conductors.
