Tight Supply of Nannies in Guangzhou

Write: Clachas [2011-05-20]
The end of the Spring Festival is always marked by the return to Guangzhou of hundreds of thousands of migrant workers. As a result, workers are becoming more demanding in terms of wages and working conditions, and that is true in many professions.
The child care industry is now facing a serious shortage of nannies which has sent prices soaring for full time caretakers. This shortage intensified over the Spring Festival and even untrained nannies willing to continue working during the golden week could ask for as much as 2000 yuan/month, sometimes even accumulating two or three jobs. This situation shouldn't return to normal before March.
In general, people prefer to hire trained and qualified child caretakers. In Guangzhou, the monthly wage of a nanny with over 5 years of experience can go from 3000 yuan/month to over 4500 yuan/month. The average market wage of a skilled baby-sitter is 1700 to 2000 yuan/month, whilst an untrained nanny only costs 1200 to 1300 yuan/month.
