The Guangzhou Development and Reform Commission yesterday (Mar. 2nd) revealed the 2011-2020 Public Transportation plan which shows, amongst others, that within the next 15 years, 15 new metro lines will be put into operation covering most of downtown Guangzhou. All new routes and stations have been decided upon and by 2020, the city shall boast a 677 kilometer metro network.
Currently, Guangzhou has 5 metro lines totaling 150 kilometers. 3 new lines are under construction including the Guangzhou-Foshan metro and 3 existing lines are being extended. When the Guangzhou Asian Games open in November, the metro network should run 218 kilometers, reaching all main sporting events and connecting Guangzhou and Foshan.
