Announced only a few weeks ago, the first organic waste treatment plant in Guangzhou dedicated to kitchen waste will start operating in the middle of May. The first families chosen to test-run these facilities are from Hailong Wan community in Panyu district. Between thirty and fifty families have signed up to take part in the project and they shall soon be receiving two dustbins: one for organic kitchen waste and one for recyclable articles.
Each family is required to dispose of their organic waste into a green dustbin at each floor of the building which shall be collected twice a day. This system is expected to reduce remaining household waste by one third. As for other recyclable items, staff will be going door-to-door explaining to inhabitants how to deal with each item.
This new privately-run waste treatment plant will start operating on a small scale before increasing their handling capacity to 1000 tons per day at the end of the test-run.
