About 3 pm,, April 20, after three years' endeavor, the tunnel of the North Extension of Guangzhou Metro Line 3 was finally completed. This means that all tunnels of metro lines planned to operate before the Asian Games have been finished.
The North Extension of Line 3 runs from Guangzhou East Railway Station to Baiyun Airport and is estimated to be put into operation in the middle of October. From then on, it will only cost half an hour to travel from the centre of Guangzhou City to the airport.
The tunnel of North Extension of Line 3 is of the highest technological difficulty, the most complicated geological conditions, and the most challenging and risky among all tunnels of the six metros supporting the Asian Games. This year before the Asian Games, Guangzhou is going to run 3 metro extensions (Extension of Line2, North Extension of Line 3, North Extension of Line 4) and 3 new metro lines (Line 8, Guang-Fo Line, and Zhujiang New Town Automatic Transport System ). The total mileage of the newly increased metro lines amounts to 85.7 km with 60 stations in total.
When the Asian Games starts, the rail transit network of Guangzhou will reach a large scale composed of 235.7 km (including Guang-Fo Line) and 148 stations. Urban road traffic congestion will be remarkably relieved. And citizens' traveling will become more convenient.
