Beautiful ladies wearing traditional "Qipao" dresses and two imposing lions welcomed visitors at the Guangdong Pavilion which opened yesterday (April 19th) in Shanghai, just 12 days ahead of the World Expo.
The architecture of the Guangdong Pavilion reminds us of the traditional Lingnan "Qilou" buildings still frequently seen in Liwan district. A theme related to paper cutting a local handicraft covers the structure which lights up at night with eco-friendly LED lights. Between the pillars are pictures showing Guangzhou from the Ming and Qing dynasties to the 1980s.

In the pavilion, apart from finding replicas of local shops common in the old districts of Guangzhou, a 5D cinema is expected to attract curious visitors. The ceiling is actually a big screen, displaying the sky from dawn to dusk. Its interactive design means that if visitors clap their hands together, large trees will begin to grow, creating a green and healthy forest. For the really enthusiastic crowds, if they continue to applaud, rain will start falling onto the thick banana leaves and birds will return to their nests in the trees.
