The year 2011 marks the centennial of the 1911 Revolution, the Chinese bourgeois democratic revolution led by Sun Yat-sen which overthrew the Qing Dynasty. Actors from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, who attended the recent 9th China Art Festival, will jointly produce a major play on the theme of commemorating 72 revolutionists who died in the Huanghuagang Uprising.
Chen Henghao, president of the Taipei Film and Drama Business Union, signed a cooperative agreement with Cao Jianping, director of the Guangzhou Performing Arts Center, at the Chinese Excellent Performing Arts Fair on May 12. Chen said, "The 1911 Revolution is a precious national heritage for all Chinese people, and we actors have a duty to present the people's profound respect for martyrs in the form of a play."
Chen explained that they have decided to tell the story of the 72 martyrs of Huanghuagang, "The playwright is from Guangzhou, director is from Taiwan, and actors are from both sides. This is the first time that we have cooperated with each other so deeply and comprehensively."
Chen added that in 2011, the play is scheduled to be staged five times in Taiwan and more than 10 times in Chinese mainland. "We will make every effort to perform an impressive, solemn, grand, and charming play," he said.
