Direct flights from China to Brisbane will resume later this year with three weekly services between Guangzhou and Brisbane, the state government says.
They will be the first direct flights between China and Queensland since 1997 and will open the door to a potential extra 3600 Chinese travellers a month.
A $520,000 advertising campaign jointly funded by Tourism Queensland, Tourism Australia and China Southern Airlines will promote the new services by the airline, Premier Anna Bligh said in a statement.
Tourism Queensland will commit $400,000 to the marketing and promotional blitz to support the flights, Ms Bligh said.
"Previously Chinese visitors had to transit through Sydney or Melbourne to get to Queensland so providing the option for Chinese travellers to fly direct into Brisbane and easily connect to a range of Queensland destinations allows them to bypass the southern states and spend more time and money in Queensland," the Premier said.
She said China was one of Queensland's most important markets, with 153,000 Chinese visiting Queensland last year, up 16 per cent on the year before.
