The Guangzhou Port Group announced on June 3 that it will spend RMB 1 billion on various environmental protection and energy conservation projects in the years ahead, and that it will also increase its efforts to reduce dust and noise and give the port a facelift in anticipation of the forthcoming Asian Games. On the same day, the Scheme of the Guangzhou Port Group for Developing Low-carbon Logistics and Building a Green Port was officially released.

According to the Group's chairman Chen Hongxian, the scheme sets forth the environmental targets for all major port areas in Guangzhou. The Nansha Port Area will be built into a demonstration site for ecological protection. The Xinsha Port Area will become a demonstration site for clean energy featuring energy efficiency and consumption and sewage reduction.

The Huangpu Port Area will turn into a harmonious development zone with a sounder functional layout, more beautiful landscape, and harmony with local residents. The Inner Port Area will showcase its successful upgrading and become a pro-business area with cultural, leisure and accommodation facilities.

Under the new scheme, the Guangzhou Port Group will commit RMB 1 billion from 2010 to 2020 to the construction of facilities for minimizing sewage, wastewater, waste gas and noise to ensure compliance with environmental standards and build the port into a green one.
