The Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology and the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government co-hosted a press conference on the afternoon of June 3 to release the Guangzhou Plan for the Development of the Solid-state Lighting Industry. On the same day, both parties signed an agreement to build Guangzhou into a pilot city for Guangdong's green lighting initiative, signifying the commencement of the initiative.
Under the initiative, 50,000 energy-saving LED lamps, worth approximately RMB 400 million, will be installed before November this year, paving the way for Guangzhou to realize its ambition of installing solid-state lighting citywide by 2012 and allowing local citizens to enjoy the benefits of energy efficiency.
Solid-state lighting is highly energy efficient and eco-friendly. All developed nations in the world have launched solid-state lighting programs and are trying to gain a competitive edge in the solid-state lighting industry. As such, earlier this year, the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology kicked off the "Guangdong Green Lighting Pilot City" Action Plan, which is aimed at promoting the R&D, manufacturing and application of LED lightings.
As a pilot city for the green lighting initiative, Guangzhou will receive a fund of RMB 20 million from the provincial authorities in support of the city's LED demonstration project.
