Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) make up the bulk of energy efficient bulbs on sale in China.(Xinhua)
The Guangdong Government is considering a new large-scale promotion campaign for energy efficient light bulbs. This time, 8 million light bulbs should be sold to households across the province for only half of the normal retail price. 1.3 million light bulbs will be distributed in Guangzhou. These energy efficient light bulbs are likely to be available in residential communities which didn t benefit from the previous campaigns.
Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) make up the bulk of energy efficient bulbs on sale in China. However they create a mercury pollution hazard if not disposed of properly. An investigation shows that a single CFL can pollute 180 tons of water. Unfortunately China still lacks a recycling system for CFLs and so this shall be a requirement for the company who wins the bid to supply this campaign.
