With the completion in recent months of some of Guangzhou's major new landmark buildings such as Haixin Tower, the provincial museum and the opera house, Zhujiang New Town is finally starting to look like urban planners has imagined it would. But Guangzhou's urban development plan for this area is more ambitious than many think. This new north - south axis is later to extent far into Haizhu district.
Yesterday (July 21st), the Guangzhou Planning Bureau held a press conference presenting the development plan for a vast area covering 40 square kilometers on the southern bank of the Pearl River. This new area will be separated into different parts including an administration region, the second foreign consulates zone, tourism attractions and riverside residential communities.
This new CBD will benefit from excellent public transportation, including six metro lines (Lines 3, 8, 11, 12, 20 and the Guangzhou-Foshan Metro Line) and two tram lines.
Since Guangzhou was named one of China's five "National Central Cities" in early 2010, the rapid development of this area will continue due to its important strategic role.
