Yesterday morning (August 25), the mayor of Guangzhou Wan Qingliang and other leaders attended an electric vehicle test-run event held by the municipality and Dongfeng Nissan. The mayor himself took the wheel for a kilometer or so, after which he praised electric cars as being silent, easy to control and good for the environment: "we support the electric car industry" he said enthusiastically.
The mayor drove a Nissan Leaf, the first zero emissions car produced by the company and one of the only eight electric cars of its kind in the world, capable of charging in just over 30 minutes. Ren Yong, the General Manager of Dongfeng Nissan explained, "our company signed agreement with the Guangzhou Municipal Government to promote the electric car industry. After today's test event, electric cars should hit the roads in Guangzhou by 2011. "
The mayor also suggested to the company that they lower the price of these vehicles to a more acceptable price for the majority of citizens.
