At present, old shipyards, docks, warehouses and villages dominate the landscapes within the zoned area of the southern section of Guangzhou's new central axis, bounded by the southern section of the planned Island Ring Road and the main navigation channel of the Pearl River on the south and Gongye Avenue and around-the-city expressway on the north. However, Guangzhou Merchandise Enterprise Group Co., Ltd. plans to convert this city into a "harbor city" complex.
With a planned investment of RMB 5 billion, the project will cover an area of 135,600 square meters and comprise three parts the Sparkling Star Area, the Voguish Metropolitan Area, and the Modern Business Area.
To showcase the city's long history, the Sparkling Star Area will include a square named after Gothenburg and a star avenue to recreate the appearance of the area more than 200 years ago as the starting point of the Maritime Silk Route.
The Voguish Metropolitan Area will tap Guangzhou Merchandise Enterprise Group's resources to bring in flagship stores of luxury brands and build a five-star international hotel.
The Modern Business Area will comprise eco-office towers and waterfront apartment blocks.
Guangzhou Merchandise Enterprise Group is set to become the first company to launch operations in the area, to be followed by other major domestic enterprises.
