When England Bridge on Shamian Island was first built in 1861, few could have imagined the drastic changes it would witness in its lifetime. Used daily for a 150 years, it has seen the end of the colonial rule, the Japanese occupation, the Chinese civil war, and the founding of the PRC. Few structures in Guangzhou have such a long history and now there is hope that it shall have many more days ahead of it.
After being closed to traffic 4 years ago, renovation finally began yesterday (Sep. 15th) so as to preserve this architectural heritage. The renovation is thought to cost between 3 to 4 million Yuan and the authorities have promised to preserve the structure's original features, form and materials during the repairs.
