From January to August this year, Guangzhou trade volume with Asian countries and regions reached over 38 billion USD, up by 50% year-on-year and accounting for 56.5% of the city's total imports and exports.
At the press conference on "economic and trade co-operation between Guangzhou and Asian countries and regions" on October 18, Xiao Zhenyu, the director of the Guangzhou Foreign Trade and Economic Bureau explained that trade with Asia continued to increase steadily despite the Financial Crisis.
Forty-seven Asian countries and regions trade with Guangzhou. The biggest importers in Asia for Guangzhou are Hong Kong, ASEAN and Japan whilst the biggest exporters are Japan, ASEAN and Korea.
Foreign investment has greatly increased and extended into new industries ranging from hospitality, catering, renting, repairing and communications to auto parts, software, electronic information, environmental protection, petroleum, steel, ship manufacturing and modern services.
