Trial operations started this afternoon (Nov. 8th) on Guangzhou's new automated metro line dubbed APM (Automated People Mover). This is the first automatic metro to operate in China and it shall run every 7 minutes between Chigang Pagoda and Linhe Xi. The new line shall operate everyday from 8am to 8pm.
This line was planned to serve citizens commuting into Guangzhou's central business district as stations are located near main office towers, shopping malls and entertainment venues. The APM shall connect with other existing lines and tickets shall cost 2 yuan.
Special measures have been taken due to the Asian Games. Certain stations shall be closed during the opening and closing ceremonies and for the stage rehearsals. Furthermore, Haixinsha Station shall remain closed during the entire length of the Asian Games. Normal operations are expected to commence on November 28th.
The APM does not require a driver as all trains are controlled from a central command center. Emergency and safety equipment is installed inside each carriage with which passengers can contact metro staff when in need of assistance.
