On Dec. 29th, two ten-thousand-ton berths were put into trail operation in the Nansha general grain terminal. Prior to that, most bulk cargo and grain terminals of Guangzhou were concentrated in Huangpu Harbor and Xinshagang. With the addition of two new berths, the overall handling capacity of Guangzhou harbors is expected to be significantly increased. The two new berths are deep-water general berths, each with a berthing capacity of 50,000 tonnages and involving a total investment of 473 million yuan. The operation of these two berths is estimated to increase the annual throughput of Guangzhou ports by 3.85 million tonnages. After an inspection of the terminals in Nansha, Chang Min, director of Guangzhou Port Authority said that the new berths were equipped with first-class hardware facilities. In 2011, the Guangzhou Port Group will build two seven-thousand-ton berths and one hundred-thousand-ton berth in the Nansha general grain terminal. When completed, the enlarged terminal is expected to add 23 million tonnages to the annual handling capacity of Guangzhou ports. The new terminal will also facilitate the development of nearby bonded zones and logistics parks, making Nansha Harbor the biggest base of grain storage, processing and transfer in South China. |
