Guangzhou will endeavor to develop science and technology as the most powerful engine of growth in order to consolidate its status as the third largest one of China's five national central cities, said Mayor Wan Qingliang on December 15 at the closing ceremony of the ninth Congress of the Guangzhou Association of Science and Technology.
Mayor Wan stated that during the term of the 12th Five-Year Plan, Guangzhou will set out to build three new strategic pillar industries each with an annual turnover of RMB 100 billion and three new strategic pilot industries each with an annual turnover of RMB 10 billion. With these industries, Guangzhou will become the center of technology innovation in southern China, the knowledge and innovation powerhouse of China, an advanced national base for the manufacturing industry, a major base for the nation's emerging strategic industries, and a leading digitalized city in Asia.
By 2015, Guangzhou's R&D expenditures will account for three percent of the city's GDP, the number of patents granted will rise to 400 per million people, and the high-tech industries will contribute more than 45 percent of the city's gross industrial output value.
