The National Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, the Guangdong Provincial Department of Land and Resources, and the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government entered into an agreement on January 4, 2011 to jointly build a geographic space framework for "Digital Guangzhou".
With a total investment of RMB 17.6 million, the "Digital Guangzhou" Project will contain approximately 45,000 pieces of information on place names in Guangzhou's eight districts. It will allow the public to access information on the city in the comfort of their homes through a three-dimensional virtual community and digitalized urban infrastructure, and help transform traditional lifestyles.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2010. Through the three-dimensional virtual community and digitalized urban infrastructure, local residents will be able to tour the entire city in the comfort of their homes and enjoy the benefits of the digitalization of the city. As the foundation of the future "smart city", the basic geographic information project will incorporate Internet technologies to provide spatial information for residents on a daily basis.
It will also facilitate the development of intelligent transportation and intelligent residential building blocks, promote low-carbon, environmentally-friendly lifestyles, and eventually make "life in the city more enjoyable".
