The wide array of advantages offered by LED TVs compared to older technology is to lead to growing take-up of the technology.

This is the prediction of manufacturers Samsung and LG, which told Indian publication Businessworld that they are to offer a wider range of LED TVs this year in order to cater to demand.

Rohit Pandit, business head for home entertainment at LG Electronics in India, said its new range of TVs is now weighted 50-50 between LED and LCD units.

Meanwhile Samsung India deputy managing director Ravinder Zutshi forecast sales of 200,000-300,000 LED sets this year, compared to 40,000 in 2009.

Although LED sets tend to be more expensive than their LCD counterparts, they also offer better performance in terms of both quality and sustainability.

Mr Zutshi said: LEDs are much better in terms of picture quality, style, display and long-term reliability.

Last month, US company ClearLite expressed confidence that LEDs are to become increasingly common in lighting applications, describing them as the future of commercial lighting.
