Thanks to stronger than expected demand, the worldwide shipments of LCD liquid crystal display TVs will total 188 million sets this year, for a 29% year-on-year growth, according to the market researcher DisplaySearch.
The latest estimate shows global shipments of TVs, including LCD, plasma and CRT cathode ray tube models, will exceed 242 million sets this year, up 15% from a year earlier. The worldwide TV market saw shipments grow a mere 2% in 2009 due to the global crash.
An industry analyst attributes the double-digit growth in shipments of TVs globally to the recovering world economy.
Despite the expected substantial growth in shipments of TVs, the industry is currently concerned about the sufficient supply of CCFL cold cathode fluorescent lamp and LED light emitting diode backlight. The rapid consumption of LED backlight is expected to squeeze the supply to LCD TVs.
According to a survey by DisplaySearch, more than half of the shipments of 36 million sets of LED-backlight LCD TVs in 2009 were completed in the fourth quarter. Since the beginning of this year, LED modules have been aggressively promoted by leading TV brands and supply chains.
An industry analyst predicted the LED-backlight models will account for 20% of the total shipments of LCD TVs this year.
DisplaySearch forecast China will be the most important consumer market for LCD TVs this year and total shipments of LCD TVs globally this year will grow 35% year-on-year.
