Mainland China`s Aggressive LED Streetlight Project to Benefit Taiwan`s Makers

Taiwan`s LED light emitting diode manufacturers are likely to bag half of the LED-streetlight contracts included in an aggressive plan announced last year by mainland China`s authorities.

As part of the mainland`s energy-conservation effort, the China`s Ministry of Science and Technology last year worked out a plan to install around 100,000 streetlights in 10 major metropolises across the mainland.

People familiar with the situation pointed out that China`s National Development and Reform Commission NDRC which is in charge of implementation of the project, is considering offering Taiwan`s manufacturers half of the contracts designated for four cities in Guangdong, Fujian and Sichuan Provinces.

Industry watchers estimated the 50,000 streetlights to bring Taiwan`s manufacturers total revenue of around NT$1 billion US$31 million based on the assumption that each LED streetlight costs NT$20,000 US$625 Potential contract recipients include Epistar, Everlight Electronics and Genius Electronic Optical.

Officials of Taiwan`s Ministry of Economic Affairs MOEA are reportedly to sign an agreement with their counterparts from NDRC soon over the deal via some industrial associations.

The MOEA, informed sources pointed out, has actively negotiated with the NDRC since the announcement of the streetlight project on allowing Taiwan`s manufacturers to access the contracts. The ministry originally managed to convince the NDRC to give all of the contracts to Taiwan`s manufacturers. However, the NDRC eventually only agreed to give half of the number on grounds that the mainland`s local manufacturers also need to be cared.
