Solar-powered plane reveals energy-saving potential

The potential of energy-saving solar technology has been highlighted by the test flight of a new prototype solar-powered aeroplane.

Solar Impulse, a single-seat aircraft with a wingspan of 262.5ft, has touched down in Switzerland after completing a 24-hour flight.

The revolutionary aircraft functions by storing energy from the suns rays during the daylight hours using the panels on its large wings, allowing it to stay aloft even during the night.

This technology is not intended to replace traditional aircraft fuel sources in the immediate future, with the flight instead focusing on trialling and promoting energy-saving technology.

Project co-founder Bertrand Piccard said: When you took off it was another era. You land in a new era where people understand that with renewable energy you can do impossible things.

Earlier this week, energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne revealed plans to promote the use of solar technology in the UK by allowing councils to sell green energy back to the National Grid.
