Residents of a village in India have seen their street lights upgraded with LEDs as part of a scheme to demonstrate the benefits of the energy-saving technology.

Makumpathar No.4 village, which is located in the Margherita subdivision of Tinsukia district in Assam, has become India?s first LED Village under an intiative conducted by the Asian nation?s bureau of energy efficiency, reports the Assam Tribune.

This has seen 100 of the settlement?s streetlights replaced with LED-based technology, while a number of 6W LED lamps were also handed out to local electricity consumers for private use.

According to project consultant Jasbir Singh, the village will be the first of several streetlight networks in the Assam region to be upgraded with LEDs.

Minister for power Pradyut Bordoloi expressed hope that the scheme will illustrate the usefulness and necessity of energy-saving technology of this kind.

This comes after New Streetlights reported last week that the US city of Easthampton has also installed LED street lighting in a government-funded scheme to improve environmental performance.
