Waste electrical and electronic equipment WEEE recycling regulation in the UK is set to be updated to ensure that people are recycling LEDs.
According to Materials Recycling Week, terms indicating the best way to avoid sending the devices to landfill in current legislation will be made more specific in order to improve understanding of how to comply with the rules.
WEEE recycling scheme Recolight suggested to the publication that the regulations need to be clarified due to the increasing popularity of LEDs among consumers looking for more environmentally-friendly lighting solutions.
Frank Craven, membership development manager for Recolight, said: With LED market growth set to more than double year on year it is important to ensure that the processes are in place for them to be properly recycled when they reach end-of-life.
LEDs Magazine recently reported that Recolight will help to make sure that lighting industry members are compliant with the latest WEEE regulations.
