HTC Ranks No. 4 Handset Brand in Taiwan in July

With seasonal booms hitting Taiwan's handset market during the summer vacation, the Taiwan-based High Tech Computer Corp. HTC a vendor of own-brand smartphones, effectively maintained its No. 5 position in the domestic market with a 4.9% share in sales volume, and ranked No. 4 with an 11.5% share in sales value in July, according to statistics compiled by local distributors.


By launching a couple of hot-selling smartphones, such as Desire, Legend and Smart, to tap business opportunities during summer vacation in Taiwan, HTC successfully pushed up its market share in sales volume to 4.9% in July from 4.3% posted in June. Also, the brand's market share in terms of sales value rose to 11.5% in July from June's 10.3%.


With smartphones heavily promoted by local distributors and retailers as an emerging product in Taiwan's handset market, HTC, who is fully engaged in sales of such products, is expected to further drive up its market shares in August.


In the meantime, Nokia dominated Taiwan's handset market in July with a 26.8% share in sales volume, while Sony Ericsson led in sales value with a 25% share.


Korea's Samsung commanded a 22.1% share in sales volume as the second-largest brand and 19% in sales value as No. 3 in the market in July, respectively up 3 and 3.1 percentage points from June.


Apple, however, fell by one notch to the seventh place with a share of only 2.3% in sales volume, but posted an increased share of 4.5% in sales value to remain No. 6 in the month.


Distributors' statistics show that total sales of handsets in Taiwan grew by 12.51% to 647,700 units in July from June, valued at NT$2.26 billion.
