LED lighting has been utilised by carmaker Mercedes-Benz in its new CLS coupe, which premieres at the Paris motor show in October 2010.
The manufacturer states that its car is the first to include headlamps that deliver a full range of dynamic light functions using only LED technology.
A total of 71 LEDs are used in the headlights, with separate arrow-shaped layers providing indicator, side lights and low beam functionality.
In addition to this, the CLS also incorporates LED technology into its wide wrap-around tail lights.
Mercedes-Benz states that the headlamps offer a number of innovative functions, such as allowing the side light to be seen when the dipped beam function is switched on.
It added that the use of LEDs not only provide an unmistakable appearance, but also a significantly enhanced view of the road compared with previous systems .
Last month Chris Knowles, operations director of truck parts supplier HGV Direct, stated that LED lights are also desirable for lorry drivers, with Materials Handling World magazine quoting him as saying they are more energy efficient and reliable.
