Over 2,300 people have signed up to attend the 50 technology workshops and forums set to be held in conjunction with the three-day SEMICON Taiwan 2010, which will start tomorrow in Taipei, the largest attendee number of its kind in 10 years.
SEMI Semiconductor Equipment & Materials International the trade show`s organizer, attributed the largest-ever number of the attendee mostly to the result of vigorous entry of semiconductor manufacturers into green-energy sectors such as photovoltaic and LED.
Terry Tsao, president of SEMI Taiwan and Southeast Asia operations, pointed out that as semiconductor manufacturing is already a mature industry, many chipmakers are starting tapping new fields.
The trade show is estimated to draw around 30,000 visitors this year to shop from 500 exhibitors or so. During the show, 50 technology workshops and forums will be held to address topics including micro electro mechanical systems MEMS 3D, advanced IC testing and packaging, LED process, eco-friendly process, chemical-mechanical planarization, and compound semiconductor.
Tsao pointed out that these forums and workshops are designed to offer manufacturers a quick view of growing trends and potential business opportunities, in which they may find new business and profit-taking models.
According to industry executives, MEMS has emerged as a darling application in mobile phones, game consoles, netbooks, and some automobile equipment, inspiring expectations that MEMS market would grow at an annual rate of 14% throughout this year. Taiwan`s semiconductor heavyweights including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. TSMC United Microelectronics Corp. UMC Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. ASE Lingsen Precision Industries Inc., and Sigard Corp. have started making presence in the market.
