Guangzhou residents shall have a say in the ultimate planning of Haixinsha Island.
During the 16th Asian Games some seventy venues around Guangzhou were put into use, twelve of which are newly constructed and fifty-eight upgraded and renovated. Hence one of the post-Asian-Games tasks will be to determine how best to utilize these venues once the Games have concluded.
As indicated by Peng Gaofeng, director of the Venues Department of the GAGOC (Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee) and deputy-director of Guangzhou Municipal Planning Bureau, the GAGOC, Guangzhou Sports Bureau, Guangzhou Municipal Planning Bureau, Guangzhou Reform and Development Commission and other related departments have been formulating a detailed report on how to best use these venues in the post-Asian-Games era.
Director Peng said: "An important point needs to be singled out, that is, after the Games, those venues will be reopened to citizens. Citizens will have access to all venues and even to entire areas where some venues are located" and that "an important goal of the government is to make sure that citizens can take advantage of those venues. Thus pieces of land that are specially designated for the Asian Games will become accessible to citizens for public activities after the Games".
Another piece of good news is that free outdoor fitness projects will be increased for citizens. As Director Peng indicated "these outdoor fitness projects will be rolled out all over Guangzhou for mass sport and exercises. An in-depth research has been conducted by the relevant departments and I believe that a satisfactory answer will be given to the public soon".
