Hong Kong will send volunteers for the Shenzhen Universiade next year, to be employed as information consultants and rare foreign language interpreters, the city volunteers association said Saturday.

During the Universiade, Hong Kong volunteers would work at service points at Hong Kong International Airport, checkpoints, public transport centers and sports venues, helping Shenzhen volunteers serve foreign athletes and visitors, Xue Zheng, head of the association, said Saturday, one day ahead of International Volunteer Day.

A delegation of Hong Kong volunteers visited Shenzhen yesterday, offering services with more than 100 Shenzhen volunteers at the Shenzhen Children s Hospital in Futian District. The services included giving children massages, baths and haircuts.

We will invite more Hong Kong volunteers to join our service programs in the future, preparing them for the Universiade next year. We hope the programs will become cultural exchange activities for volunteers in the two cities, giving them a better chance to learn more about each other, Xue said.

December is also the city s Universiade Service Month and more than 160 voluntary activities, such as street cleaning and training for civil behavior, would be conducted to promote the Universiade, Xue said.

There are now more than 250,000 volunteers and more than 1400 suborganizations registered with the city volunteers association. In 2011, the city will recruit about 20,000 event volunteers, 250,000 city volunteers and 1 million social volunteers to serve the Universiade.

To celebrate International Volunteer Day, there were a total of 235 volunteer activities throughout the city during the past week, Xue said.
