College of Engineering Prof. Yuan Mingwu Wins IACM Award

Peking University, Beijing, Apr. 20, 2010: In February of this year, Prof. Ted Belytschko, President of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM), wrote a congratulatory letter to Peking University (PKU) Prof. Yuan Mingwu on his receiving this year s IACM Award.

Prof. Yuan received this award because of his outstanding contributions to the field of computational mechanics. He received recognition from international peers and is highly thought of due to his pioneering achievements in large-scale eigenvalue solution, fast sparse matrix solution, and improvement on the quality of dynamic substructure and dynamic grids. Prof. Yuan will be attending the award ceremony in Sydney, Australia in July 2010 by invitation from IACM.

The IACM Award is given by IACM in recognition of outstanding and sustained contributions to the broad field of computational mechanics. These contributions are mostly important research results of significant advances in theories and methods of computational mechanics, while special contributions in leadership and administration, industrial applications, and engineering analysis, facilitating development in computational mechanics, are also recognized.

The Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM) and several media outlets widely reported this honor Professor Yuan s received.

Background Information

Yuan Mingwu, professor and doctoral advisor of PKU College of Engineering, was born on August 20, 1939. He was originally from Nantong, Jiangsu Province.

1955 1960: Bachelor s degree at PKU Department of Mathematics and Mechanics
1960 1964: Master s degree at PKU Department of Mathematics and Mechanics
1964 2004: Faculty of PKU Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science (late changed to College of Engineering). Retired in 2004.

From 1980 to 1982, Prof. Yuan attended the University of California, Berkeley for advanced study under the guidance of Prof. Edward L. Wilson. After returning to China in 1982, he organized and led the development and application of SAP84, a large-scale finite element program, which has over one thousand end users in China. He has visited and held lectures in U.S., Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Japan, Yugoslavia, Slovenia, Hong Kong and many other countries or regions. He has also published over 200 academic papers and been invited to present papers at over 20 conferences. He has also presided over more than 20 academic conferences.

Professor Yuan is currently a board member of the IACM, APACM, and EPMESC, the president of International Chinese Association for Computational Mechanics, and a distinguished member of many other organizations in computational mechanics or engineering. He is also on the editorial boards of many academic journals both at home and abroad.

He has received many other prestigious honors, such as the T. H. H. Pian Medal of ICES in 2000, the Fellow Award of IACM in 2004, the Senior Scientists of APACM in 2004 and this IACM Award in 2010. His domestic awards include the third prize of State Science and Technology Award, the first prize of Science and Technology Award by State Education Committee, Major Scientific and Technological Achievement Award of the 7th Five-Year Plan. He is currently responsible for leading and organizing the PKU part of the National Basic Research Program (a.k.a the 973 Program) implemented by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
