Despite the tragedy of the Sichuan earthquake on May 12, the people of China and the world are united in their compassion for the victims. Chaoda Group donated RMB 15 million to the earthquake victims in Sichuan province. Chaoda employees also made donations including RMB 5 million from Kwok Ho, chairman and president of the Group. Chaoda does not have production bases in Sichuan province. The Group's operation was not affected by the Sichuan earthquake.
On May 15, the Group conducted a program called "Sending Our Love to the Earthquake Victims of Sichuan" at headquarters to provide an opportunity for employees to express their emotions and grief for their fellow citizens. At the event, Mr. Kwok said: "Although we may not be able to go to the disaster area ourselves to provide direct support, we will do our best through a variety of channels available to us to help families recover from the tragedy."
As a private enterprise, Chaoda devotes considerable attention to issues of social welfare. For example, after Fujian Province was hit by Typhoon Saomai in 2006, Chaoda employees donated RMB 1 million to the recovery effort. Chairman Kwok personally gave RMB 20 million towards the reconstruction of Ningde City, one of the areas most seriously affected. Chaoda has also built two Project Hope primary schools and established scholarships and educational funds at agricultural universities to help students from impoverished rural areas.
