On Sept.10, 2009, ShenzhenUniversity opened her brand-new college, School of Medicine, which was described as a leaping advancement in the history of ShenzhenUniversity. The school s first academic chair was the eminent professor and academician of CAE (Chinese Academy of Engineering), Zhong Nanshan, a top Chinese physician and expert in respiratory diseases. The city s Deputy Party Secretary and Vice Mayor came to the ceremony and unveiled the plate for the new school together with Professor Zhong and SZU s Party Secretary Mr. Jiang Tanyu. The ceremony s VIP guests included leaders from domestic and overseas medical schools and government officials from Beijing and Guangzhou.
SZU s President Zhang Bigong gave an address to all attendees. He said the school would keep to the principles, Small, Research Oriented, and Elitist , and labeled with Leading-expertise, Elitist enrollment, Advanced research, and Exquisite teaching . He said the establishment of the medical school of SZU would facilitate the optimizing of Shenzhen s medical service and its scientific research level. He also gave his warmest welcome and congratulations to the newly admitted 30 students for the clinical program under the school.
Vice Mayor of Shenzhen, Mr. Tang Jie, on behalf of the Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government, expressed his thanks for the efforts devoted by all the faculties. He said Shenzhen Municipal Government would always support the development of the school in all respects, and help create opportunities to allow the school to grow into a cradle of top-notch physicians and an incubator of advanced medical technology and innovations.
Prof. Zhong Nanshan, on the solemn white-coat ceremony, handed over the white coat to each new clinical student and later the students was led to read the professional oath which would mark their first day as a professional medical trainee.
The opening ceremony was followed by The International Conference on Medical Schools . Deans from domestic and overseas medical schools contributed their thoughts and knowledge to the conference. They were Prof. Eike O. Martin from Heidelberg, Germany, Prof. Dennis A. Carson, from San Diego, California, Prof. David Wilkinson, from Queensland, Australia, and Prof. Marsha Rappley, from Michigan, U.S.
