On 17th and 18th of September, with the centennial celebration of the university was nearly 60 days apart, the opening ceremonies 2006 were held respectively in the main campus in Guangzhou and Zhuhai College to welcome 6,761 new students coming from more than 50 countries and regions, including 267 Ph.D Candidates, 2,017 post-graduates, 3,824 undergraduates, 1,032 preparatory students, and 621 language students. 3,934 new students are from abroad and Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan. Mr. Hu Jun extended his warmest welcome to the new students and introduced the history and unique features of the university.
It is said that from this autumn semester on, the students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are charged same tuition fees as their mainland peers. The number of these students has increased, with the number of graduate students has increased by 20%. The number of matriculated students from Macao has largely increased; the number of graduates from Taiwan is nearly doubled compared with that of last year. Among new undergraduates, there are also foreign students from U.S, Indonesia, and Malaysia etc. And this, Mr Hu said, reflected two features of our university: Firstly, Jinan University offers full-fledging programs, which can satisfy needs from different students; secondly, Jinan University, founded for overseas Chinese students is an internationalized university, which is open to different peoples and cultures of the world.
He wished the new students could also foster their spirit of creativity and promote their ability of practice and model those outstanding alumni and inherit their sense of honor and commitment and that they could learn by your heart the school motto of loyalty, sincerity, integrity and respect ,uphold the patriotic tradition of Jinan University, and build up themselves to serve the society. Also the centennial celebration is approaching, Mr Hu hoped the new students to become a hospitable host and show to guests and alumni the best side of them during the celebration.
