NEW YORK Spring flowers may have been blooming outside, but it was geometric patterns that were the most plentiful at Printsource and Direction, two textile-design shows held at the Hotel Pennsylvania last week. Brooklyn-based Squeeze First, a new exhibitor at Printsource, showed strong, graphic looks in colors that pop for summer 2007. Dave Sander, Squeeze Firsts co-owner and designer, said he was inspired by feathers and chocolate kisses, among other objects. "Were just trying to create looks that are different and catch the eye," he said. The result: fresh-looking patterns, most notably a paint-splattered print in fuchsia and red.
New York-based Spoogi also showed jazzy geometrics at Printsource, as well as patterns with a slightly more exotic cast. "After so much bohemian, we wanted to make the look cleaner, but still somewhat ethnic," said Tricia Langman, co-owner.
Meanwhile, at Direction, kitschy chain prints were just a few of the geometric patterns offered. "Theres definitely a push toward softly geometric and graphic looks," said Adam Read, co-owner of The Colorfield, in New York. And at Milkprint, another New York-based firm that showed at Direction, designer Sarah Gordon predicted that these motifs will be "big" for summer 2007. "Weve gone from very romantic to very graphic," she said. Her studio offered plenty of stripes and dots; strong, rich colors, especially green and purple, were also key.
