IT'S the last full day of menswear shows today in Paris and all eyes will be on the catwalks of Givenchy (designed by Ozwald Boateng), Dior Homme (will it be Hedi Slimane's last?), and Pierre Cardin, who will celebrate his 84th birthday on Thursday but is determinedly not slowing down ("I'm almost the biggest name in fashion," he said recently. "I go to my restaurants to eat. I stay at my hotels. I drink my water. The only thing I don't have is salt and pepper."). So what does menswear mean for next summer? If Emporio Armani, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Galliano are to be believed, no man will get through the season without a pair of tailored shorts and a hat of some description ?trilbies, bowlers or even just a flamboyant Elvis quiff 'do ?to perfect the pose. Sneakers worn with suits and open collared shirts, with ties that have grown into lightweight scarves, made for a selection of styles that mostly meant our men can relax next summer ?but they'll look just dandy as they do.
