Indonesia : Government to raise leather export taxes to 25-35%

Write: Aksel [2011-05-20]

With the purpose of ensuring continuous supply of local leather, Government has decided to raise duties on leather exports from 15-20 percent to about 25-35 percent.

Metal, Machineries, Textile and Multifarious Industries Director General Ansari Bukhari informed the media that in spite of Government having reviewed export taxes, leather based footwear firms have raised the issue of shortage in supply of raw materials.

Levies will be increased to restrict the export of leather products, thereby facilitating tanning firms and industries using hide to enhance their businesses.

Presently, an export duty of maximum 55 percent is applicable to prevent price manipulation between tanning sector and its customers.

Ansari added that his directorate will co-operate with Department of Finance to make a report.
