A rationalised and standard-size chart for Indian consumers, based on Indian body build, may soon be made available to Indian apparel industry.
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) has completed a project undertaken on garment sizing for Indian body size by developing software that can be used for mapping body size.
"We studied a sample size of 1,500 people — 1,000 women and 500 men — across the 18-26 year age group and collected anthropometrical data which was later analysed," said IITD Textile Technology Associate Professor Deepti Gupta.
According to Dr Gupta, all taking into account measurement protocols based on American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) that maintains more than 12,000 standards. About 29 measurements for men and 35 measurements for women were analysed for purpose of study.
Brands catering to Indian population use borrowed size charts from the US or the UK and modify it according to the Indian build why people increasingly preferring tailored clothes.
Size Finder, the software used for body mapping, works on mathematical calculations based on simple averages or percentiles.
"Such a thing would help any company to understand the size demand of the customers. Nomenclature of the sizes might differ across brands based on the target population.
But it is real data and the companies will have a concrete base on which to set their sizing chart," said Dr Gupta. The retail bandwagon has also made the sizing problem complex.
US had recently conducted a study, Size USA, to have an idea about body sizes of American population and the London School of Fashion conducting a similar study.
