Women describe working conditions at textile plant

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. The emergency door at the back was always locked, said Norma Urbina, a worker at the Michael Bianco Inc. textiles company.

If workers wiped their hands with toilet paper, owner Francesco Insolia fined them $20, she said. If they stayed too long in the bathroom, "he came and got them." If they were a minute late, he charged them $20.

If they had a headache, he charged them 25 cents per Tylenol.

"We worked with no heat. He'd only turn the heat on for five minutes and there was cold air coming out and then he'd turn it off," said Urbina, one of 327 people detained in a federal immigration raid at the plant Tuesday.

"He said the heat didn't work. He would say the problem is the building's owner - not his."
