German pharmacy group Celesio, owner of Lloydspharmacy, has hired NM Rothschild to approach private equity firms to help form a bidding consortium to buy Alliance Boots.
The Sunday Times reported that although Celesio would be forbidden by the competition commission to bid for all of Alliance Boots, it is willing to pay just under half the current market value of Alliance Boots to take control of Moss, the community pharmacy chain that was part of Alliance UniChem prior to its merger with Boots.
Clothing retailer Alexon has released preliminary full year results showing group sales (excluding Dolcis) down 5.5% on a like-for-like basis to GBP325.8 million.
Topshop has signed an agreement with Barneys that will see branded boutiques open in 19 Barneys department stores across the US. This should help Topshop establish a presence as well as judge the US appetite for its product before opening a flagship store.
Primark, the discount fashion chain, has opened a 66,000 sq ft flagship store on London's Oxford Street. The chain has taken over the site previously occupied by Allders, at 499-517 Oxford Street, near Marble Arch.
Childrenswear retailer Mothercare has reported a 5.1% increase in group sales for the year ending March 31, 2007. UK sales increased 1.0% while international sales increased 30%. 62 new international stores were opened during the year and the childrenswear retailer now has 328 stores in 38 countries.
