India : Govt keen to uplift condition of weavers

Shankersinh Vaghela, the Textile Minister, during Question Hour in Rajya Sabha on May 9, said that the Government is considering a proposal to waive off Rs700-800 crore loan outstanding with handloom weavers and lower the bank lending rates to seven percent.
Vaghela said, "The proposal is under consideration and we will approach the Cabinet soon for approval".
According to the Minister, Government has provided an insurance and medical scheme for weavers wherein 22 lakhs of them have been insured till date and it has also adopted cluster development approach to improve the condition of handloom weavers.
Around 12 different schemes for development of weavers are under implementation which has resulted increase in production.
