During the July-March 2006-07 period, overall exports of the country reached US $9036.4 million, representing a surge of over 20 percent, especially on the back of footwear and garments.
Knitwear industry, however, failed to achieve target exports of $3485.2 million and earned around $3335.2 million.
Fazlul Haq, President, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), explained, "The failure is due to the adverse effect of labour unrest in the garment sector in May 2006."
Meanwhile, Haq is determined and believes that the sector can still reach the target of $4.8 billion for the entire fiscal.
In the first nine months of current fiscal, woven garments exports rose 18.2 percent and obtained $3505.7 million against $2965.04 million in the corresponding period last year.
While, ceramic products, handicrafts, footwear and cut flowers registered improved performance, jute goods, raw jute and chemical fertilizer exports were seen sliding.
