Mr Pascal Lamy, the Director General of the World Trade Organization has clarified that the “Buy American”, provision in the recently released stimulus package, doe not violate global trade rules, because of the way it has been structured.
Mr Lamy staunchly said, “While deploring protectionism measures in general, the ‘Buy American’ provision is consistent with WTO obligations, since it presents opportunities to other countries to share in the expanded works projects”.
He made a strong appeal for resuming the stalled Doha round of trade negotiations and added by saying that the fruitful culmination of Doha round could prove to be the best kind of insurance against protectionism measures.
But he refused to comment on new directives to the Transportation Security Department to buy US made textiles and uniforms and also can be implemented for other homeland security departments in the US in the near future.
