Australian designers have become known for their unique style and somewhat irreverant approach to fashion. And during Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, designers stayed true to their reputation. Designers presented their Spring/Summer 2009/2010 collections during the April 27-May 1 run of events. And there were plenty of decidedly chic looks for the new season.
The event, produced by IMG Fashion, was held at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Sydney's scenic Circular Quay, overlooking the Sydney Opera House. It has become a key fashion destination for buyers from the Pacific Rim and beyond. The lineup included leading Australian fashion brands such as Zimmermann, Nicola Finetti, Kirrily Johnston, Jayson Brundson, Marnie Skillings, Lisa Ho, Wayne Cooper, Sass & Bide, Camilla and Marc, Ginger & Smart and Anna & Boy. And there were several up-and-coming brands, as well, including Romance Was Born, Ellery, Therese Rawsthorn, T.V. and The Cassette Society. In total, approximately 110 brands were showcased at the event in individual
and group collection shows and at the "Emerge" boutique trade show. Key trends this season revolved around the country's casual lifestyle translated into easy-to-wear trans-seasonal collections. But the look was anything but simplistic. Designers varied the look from dark and edgy to color-infused sophistication. Details such as sequins freshened up jackets and dresses, and the shoulders were a focal point with exaggerated shapes and a nod to futurism. Bondage-like straps added a dose of sexiness to the season, and there were plenty of transparent fabrics for added intrigue.
In contrast, the trend to menswear continued, albeit with classics such as the standard white shirt served up in a variety of new shapes. Pants were also plentiful in proportions that ranged from wide trouser silhouettes to loosely draped harem styles. Jewelry featured over-size shapes and a slant to the surreal. And of course, there was a full range of '80s-inspired looks including acid-wash denim, leggings, blazers, moto jackets, bright acid colors and jumpsuits.
