TEXTILE firm Hainsworth has reorganised its business as part of plans to streamline its manufacturing operation. The Leeds-based business, which has a turnover of £15m, completed a strategic review and restructured the business into four ranges: Apparel Fabrics; Technical and Industrial Textiles; Interior Fabrics and the Textile Innovation Centre.
The firm said the new 'lean' manufacturing technique, which is popular in Japan and now being adopted in companies across the UK, would lead to improved profitability, a better layout, optimised stock levels and better use of equipment. Hainsworth, which employs 200 staff, developed its business strategy with help from the Manufacturing Advisory Service Yorkshire and Humber.
Thomas Hainsworth, managing director of Hainsworth, said: "Working with MAS has helped with our reorganisation and has led to our employees feeling empowered to make decisions on the new factory layout. We have a better designed production area and are using our floor space more effectively. Research carried out by MAS also influenced our decision to keep our yarn production in-house which has safeguarded 20 jobs."
