A Bathgate-based clothing company is to close its distribution plant with the loss of 60 jobs.

Russell Europe sells its clothes under brand names like Jerzees schoolgear and Russell workwear.

The company blamed poor economic conditions and said it was moving distribution closer to both suppliers and customers.

Russell Europe is part of the Fruit of the Loom company, which is owned by the Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate.

Its chief executive, Warren Buffet, is ranked as one of the richest men in the world.

Economic conditions

Russell Europe said the decision to close the Bathgate plant followed a company-wide review.

Chief executive Len Marbury said: "We are having to take a very hard look at all of our operations worldwide due to the poor economic conditions we are operating under, as most other companies are."

It is understood the company plans to move the distribution work to Germany.

West Lothian Council said it was seeking a meeting with the company.

Martyn Day, executive councillor for development and transport, said: "We will work with our partners to provide support, advice and assistance to employees at this difficult time."
