Earlier 3-D scanning techniques were used only in industrial applications such as automotive and mechanical. These techniques were not considered suitable for capturing human subjects because of body movements and underwear reflectance.
Now a new system has emerged in the apparel sector, which is a combination of body scanner and measurement extraction software.
Similar in structure to a dressing room, this process utilizes laser technology to generate the exact dimensions of the human body. The customer has to step into the body scanner and remove all clothing, with the exception of his undergarments.
97 various measurements are collected, and are sent directly to a computer program, which is a part of the body scanning system.
The garment is thus configured. With the assistance of an experienced sales person, the customer chooses a cut and a fabric and discusses his or her individual wishes.
The consumer can also get an accurate idea of how the finished suit or costume will look by comparing all the different details such as color, fit, style etc to generate a realistic 3D representation of the customer is generated, which is a 'Digital Twin' of the person scanned.
