Century-old library to reopen in S.China

Write: Winter [2011-05-20]

A century-old library in Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong Province, will reopen next Thursday after being closed for repairs for five years, with newly added hi-tech services and energy-saving facilities.

Sun Yat-sen Library of Guangdong Province, built in 1912 in Guangzhou City, will combine its more than 6 million book collection with the virtual collections of the e-library, said curator Liu Honghui.

A solar power system has been installed to supply power for the library.

The repairs began at the end of 2005 at a cost of 500 million yuan (75 million U.S. dollars).

The library was named after Sun Yat-sen, a forerunner of the Chinese Democratic Revolution, as it was where Sun and his colleagues gathered for revolutionary activities. It was also the former seat of Sun Yat-sen University.
